What is a web site?
A web site is a place on the Internet where you can explore your business, your
hobby, or your personal interests.
How will a web site benefit to us?
A web site will expand your client base worldwide because it allows your
customers to visit your business and gather information about your products and
services when it is convenient for them. Having a web site turns your business
from local to international . It is the most cost efficient way to spread the
word about your business or hobby. You may tell the world as much or as little
as you want.
How do we decide on what the web site should
look like?
Your personal likes and dislikes as well as favourite colours should be
discussed with your web designer. A good web designer will ask you many
questions. Design, content, ease of navigation and speedy download are a few of
the things to consider when deciding what you want your site to look like.
What is HTML?
HTML stands for the hyper text mark up language. This is the language that all
browsers (software that you use to view the internet) use to understand what
should be displayed and how it should be displayed.
What is Web Hosting?
Web hosting means finding a server on which to place (publish) your website so
others can see it. Most Web Designers will be able to supply space for your
site at a very minimal fee or be able to advise you on where to host your site.
This gives a much more professional appearance to your site, with no pop up
advertising to distract your visitors.
What is Domain Name?
A domain name is a specific name that identifies the owner. i.e.
www.webpage-world.com. The Domain Name gives you and url (internet address)
that is easy to remember. You can move your site at any time to any server and
still be found because your domain name does not change.
What does 'custom design' mean?
Custom means designed just for you. You will not run into the same
design anywhere else on the internet. Your site will be unique to you and your
business/hobby.
What is 'maintenance'?
Maintenance is revising outdated information on EXISTING pages
and resubmitting your site to the search engines on a regular basis. (Changing
the style or look of the site, i.e. changing backgrounds, graphics, etc, are
not considered maintenance, nor is adding pages to a website. These are classed
as REDESIGN)
Why are some pages so quick to download and
some so slow?
A properly designed web site is optimized to download as fast as possible.
Optimize in this instance means that all graphics, pictures and backgrounds are
compressed to make the files as small as possible. Another reason that pages
may download slowly is that there is too much on one page, large pictures, or
the links on that page go to sites that are having server problems. Music on a
website is also major reason for slow downloading. The server that a website is
hosted on plays a very important part in the speed of download.
What is a Site Map and why
does my site benefit from one?
A site map is a linked, graphic or text-based display of a website's hierarchy,
similar to an organization chart. Typically, site maps break down a website's
content into increasingly specific subject areas to help the visitor understand
its structure, from the main navigation pages to their subordinate pages. The
main difference between a site map and a subject index is typically an
alphabetical list, not a hierarchically structured set of links. A site map is
a useful addition to a website as it helps enhance user experience and assists
search engines to ‘navigate' the site. A good site map ensures that all
websites pages of your site can be indexed by search engine.

located.
What is a domain name registry? A registrar? A registrant?
A registry maintains the authoritative, master database of domain
names for a top-level domain (TLD) like .ORG. The registry ensures that each
domain name is unique.
Registries such as PIR do not take domain name registrations
directly from the public. Instead, the registry receives domain name
information from registrars, the "retailers" who register domain names on
behalf of registrants. Registrants are people or organizations that would like
to register and use a domain name.
What is an IP address?
Every computer on the Internet has a numeric address called an IP Address,
which is used to identify the location of the computer. An example of an IP
address is 204.174.223.72. Each domain name replaces this string of numbers
with a simple word or expression.

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of designing a
website specifically for search engines with the goal of obtaining the highest
possible rankings according to selected keywords.
Why is SEO so important?
It is estimated that over 90% of people use the Internet to search
for products or services with the intent of purchasing. SEO makes sure your
website has all the necessary criteria to position high in search results.
Without a ranking in the top 20, your website has no chance of being found by
potential customers.
What are Submissions?
Submitting your site to search engines and directories usually
involves visiting the site and completing a form. SEO Gateway believes that
manually submitting to each engine and directory produces the best results.
What is Hidden Text?
Text that is visible to the search engine spiders but not to site visitors.
Hidden text is primarily used to add extra keywords in the page without
actually adding content to a site which may mostly consist of images. Most
search engines will penalize Web sites which use hidden text.
What is cloaking?
Determining which search engine spider is visiting a web page and then giving
each spider a page optimized for it's particular algorithm. This method of
search engine optimization can result in a website being removed from the major
search engines.
What is a doorway page?
A method of search engine optimization considered to be SPAM. These are pages
created for nothing but the purpose of ranking first for a particular keyword
phrase. These pages usually lack any significant content and do not reflect the
tone of the rest of the website. If a search engine determines a website
has used this tactic then the website will be removed from the search engine
permanently.
What is Meta Tags
A part of your webpage header that is "invisible" to your viewers. Meta Tags
are just one facet used by some search engines to determine the content of your
website.
What is Link popularity
Link popularity refers to the number of outside links pointing to
your site. The majority of major search engines now figure link popularity into
the ranking algorithms so it is prudent to seek outside links to your site.
What is Spider
The software that scans documents and adds them to an index by
following links. Spider is often used as a synonym for search engine.
What is Search Engine
The software that searches an index of spidered web pages and
returns matches. Also used to describe web sites which allow users to search
the Internet for keywords. See our list of top search engines.
