Image processing allows you to enhance CCD images using a wide variety of algorithms. However, keep in mind that image processing can enhance a good picture, but it cannot make a bad picture good. It is important to get the best possible image while you are at the telescope. Most imagers spend their time at the telescope taking images; the processing is not done until a later time. You can always process while the sun is out. When it is clear and dark you will want to get as many images as you can!
Most image processing functions either adjust the range of all pixels together (stretching) or modify pixels based on the value of their neighbors (filtering). This section introduces the basic concepts and explains some of the variations available for each technique.
An image is digitized to convert it to a form which can be stored in a computer's memory or on some form of storage media such as a hard disk or CD-ROM. This digitization procedure can be done by a scanner, or by a video camera connected to a frame grabber board in a computer. Once the image has been digitized, it can be operated upon by various image processing operations.
Image processing operations can be roughly divided into three major categories, Image Compression, Image Enhancement and Restoration, and Measurement Extraction. Image compression is familiar to most people. It involves reducing the amount of memory needed to store a digital image. |
